In light of unprecedented federal attacks, Maura took immediate action to protect access to reproductive health care, including abortion. She stockpiled mifepristone, signed Executive Orders protecting abortion patients and providers, and made over-the-counter contraception free.
She signed the strongest Shield Law in the country to protect patients and health care providers from outside legal threats and secure privacy for sensitive medical information. The updated law also confirms that abortion care must be provided in emergencies when medically necessary and prevents state officials from cooperating with federal or out-of-state investigations into legally protected care.
She also signed executive orders reaffirming that emergency abortion care is protected under Massachusetts law and that the state will not enforce any hypothetical national abortion ban.
