NBC Boston: One-on-one with Gov. Healey as she gears up for 2026 and a reelection campaign

Election year is nearly here and Gov. Maura Healey is seeking a second term in 2026, touting success on housing, health care and a revitalized MBTA.

“In three years we’ve made major reforms to the T which was on fire when I started, literally, train cars were on fire,” Healey said.

The governor is facing three Republican challengers, including Baker Administration alumni Mike Kennealy and Brian Shortsleeve, along with entrepreneur Mike Minogue.

Those three have challenged Healey on a variety of topics, including the state shelter system, which was previously overloaded with migrant families arriving in Massachusetts. Occupancy totals have come down; hotels and motels have closed but those seeking to unseat the governor say it remains a critical issue for voters to consider.

“Our costs are lower and the number of families in the shelters of Massachusetts, and they’re Massachusetts families by the way, I changed that – the number of families are half of the number of families as when I started” said Gov. Healey.
