Massachusetts police unions cite Governor Healey’s career-long commitment to public safety
Boston, MA – Today, Governor Healey stood alongside members of the Massachusetts State Police Commissioned Officers Association (MASPCOA), the State Police Association of Massachusetts (SPAM), Massachusetts Coalition of Police (MassCOP), and the Boston Police Patrolmen’s Association (BPPA) in Dorchester, where the groups officially endorsed Governor Maura Healey for reelection in recognition of her commitment to supporting law enforcement and keeping the communities of Massachusetts safe. The unions represent thousands of members of law enforcement across the state.
“Governor Healey understands that protecting our communities starts with supporting those who do the work,” said the Executive Board of Massachusetts State Police Commissioned Officers Association in a statement. “She has stood with us time and again, working alongside us to help us keep our state safe and we’re proud to endorse her for reelection.”
“Throughout her time in office, Governor Healey has been a great partner to our troopers,” said President Brendan Murphy, State Police Association of Massachusetts. “Her administration has delivered fair contracts, and she’s working to keep our men and women safe on the front lines and help us recruit and retain officers. We’re proud to endorse Maura for being a strong partner for law enforcement.”
“Maura Healey has proven she has our back. She has a career-long record of working hand in hand with law enforcement, first as Attorney General, and now as Governor,” said President Scott Hovsepian, Massachusetts Coalition of Police. “She has been a champion of public safety, working to ensure our officers have the resources and support they need to serve our communities, and has a long record of helping us hold bad actors accountable as Attorney General. We trust her to continue to make our state safer.”
“We are backing Governor Healey not only because she respects the men and women who keep Boston safe, but because she has proven time after time to be a true partner on public safety matters,” said President Larry Calderone, Boston Police Patrolmen’s Association. “From securing fair compensation and investing in mental health resources for our patrolmen to working with law enforcement to tackle the crime that drives violence in our city, she earned our support because we know she’ll have our backs.”
“This is a deeply meaningful day for me. Some of my proudest moments have been standing with our law enforcement officers as we faced some of our state’s most difficult challenges,” said Governor Maura Healey. “And some of my most heartbreaking moments have been attending the services of those whose lives were taken in the line of duty. Those moments – of great pride and profound loss – remind us all what this calling asks of those who choose it, and what we owe to every person who puts on the uniform and answers the call to serve. It’s why I will always stand with them, and as Governor I will make sure they have the support, training, and partnership necessary to do their jobs and keep people safe.”
Governor Healey has a long history of working alongside law enforcement to strengthen community safety. Crime rates in Massachusetts have continuously fallen since she took office, including in Boston. As Attorney General, she criminalized the trafficking of fentanyl in Massachusetts, formed the New England Fentanyl Strike Force to target traffickers and cartels, and took illegal guns off the streets to keep officers safe. As Governor, she established the first standardized statewide active shooter response plan in the nation and brought together law enforcement, local leaders, prosecutors, and community partners for conversations to reinforce safety strategies and discuss how the state can work more collaboratively to tackle crime and protect our communities. She recently took action to take the dangerous substance Kratom off shelves as it is increasingly becoming a public health and public safety threat, especially for young people. The Healey-Driscoll administration has also worked with cities and towns to deliver millions in funding to meet local police and fire department staffing and equipment needs.
